The year started with Jean-Charles Fitoussi‘s retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française. Most of his films are a miracle and watching the rare Je ne suis pas morte (I Did Not Die, 2008) was one of the best moments of my year.

I also won’t forget director Betrand Bonello becoming a fiction in these three films:

– Saint Laurent (2014), by B. B. himself

– Le dos rouge (2014), by Antoine Barraud, author of another very interesting film released early this year, Les gouffres (The Sinkholes, 2012)

– Où en êtes-vous, Betrand Bonello ? (2014), by B. B. shown at his exhibition at the Centre Pompidou.

At the Pompidou as well, a retrospective of Wang Bing premiered two of the most important films of the year:

– Feng ai (‘Til madness do us part, 2013)

– San zimei (Three sisters, 2012)

There were at least five great films dealing with academic issues this year:

– At Berkeley (Frederick Wiseman, 2013)

– Student (Darezhan Omirbaev, 2012), and another great Kazakh film by Emir Baighazin, Uroki garmonii (Harmony Lessons, 2013)

Haganenet (The Kindergarten Teacher, Nadav Lapid, 2014)

– U ri Sunhi (Our Sunhi, Hong Sang-soo, 2013)

I remember five wonderful films on memory and landscapes:

– Mille soleils (A Thousand Suns, Mati Diop, 2013)

– Maps to the Stars (David Cronenberg, 2014)

– Jauja (Lisandro Alonso, 2014)

– Clouds of Sils-Maria (Olivier Assayas, 2014)

– Mercuriales (Virgil Vernier, 2014)

Two untranslatable French titles:

– P’tit Quinquin (Bruno Dumont, 2014)

– Mange tes morts – Tu ne diras point (Jean-Charles Hue, 2014)

And six multidimensional approaches to language, animals and otherness:

Adieu au langage (Goodbye to language, Jean-Luc Godard, 2014)

Jiao you (Stray Dogs, Tsai Ming-liang, 2013)

Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer, 2013)

Das merkwürdige Kätchen (The Strange Little Cat, Ramon Zürcher, 2013)

Di renjie: Shen du long wang (Young Detective Dee : Rise of Sea Dragon, Tsui Hark, 2013)

Le paradis (Alain Cavalier, 2014)

There were two wonderful anthologies:

Cavalier express: eight films by Alain Cavalier

Pan pleure pas: three films by Gabriel Abrantes [el vídeo muestra un extracto de Liberdade (2011):]

Two wonderfully staged posthumous revenges:

Aimer, boire et chanter (Life of Riley, Alain Resnais, 2014)

A vingança de uma mulher (A Woman’s Revenge, Rita Azevedo Gomes, 2012)

And an unexpected masterpiece: Love is Strange (Ira Sachs, 2014)
